Steyn: The Glamor of Evil

Do read Mark Steyn's analysis of the Glamor of Evil. 

I quite agree with him that the pull to evil is largely because of the huge dearth of purpose of so many individuals living today. That's why 'teach your children well' is one of the most gifts that parents can give to their children. Teach them morality, teach them the right way to behave, fill their souls-not just their pockets and their plates.

Now, I admit, pathetically, that I laughed at Headchoppistan, but the rest is deadly serious and Steyn hits the nail on the head precisely with this. It's a one paragraph summary of what we are facing as a civilization, including paying for our own suicide:

"Success breeds success. The success of evil breeds darker evil. And the glamorization of evil breeds ever more of those "recent Muslim converts" and "lone wolves" and "self-radicalized extremists" in the news. That's a Big Idea - a bigger idea, indeed, than Communism or Nazism. Islam, as we know, means "submission". But Xtreme-Sports Hyper-Islam, blood-soaked and baying, is also wonderfully liberating, offering the chance for dull-witted, repressed young men to slip free of even the most basic societal restraints. And, when the charms of the open road in Headchoppistan wear thin, your British and Canadian and Australian and European welfare checks will still be waiting for you on the doormat back home."

I can't add anything more to that.

These folks have raised the correct alarm bells:

They give a journalism example, which is entirely plausible. I'm very concerned about this bill. I am very concerned about any state limitations on free speech-excluding threats of violence (which can, and should be dealt with via law enforcement and the criminal code).

I also have to wonder if these writers are equally bothered or troubled about free speech for those whose speech they loathe, ideologically speaking. That's the real litmus test of 'caring' about free speech.
