My Kinda Town-Or Being in Chicago While the NATO Summit Hummed Along
Chicago, Chicago-my kinda town, especially when it is NATO-time!
Whoo hoo!
Some thoughts about being in Chicago while the NATO summit was going on. First of all, the Chicago police, state troopers, paramedics and fire department were amazingly prepared for this weekend. They also must have had very good intelligence about where the possible hot spots would be. They sealed off a lot of streets, and that meant that no mobs could possibly get through a wall of police and/or police vehicles blocking the entrances.
It was hard for some people to get into the city on Friday, but we didn't have any problem. On Saturday, while out walking in the afternoon we did see the protestors. The mob was followed from above by 2 police helicopters, and in front of them was a veritable platoon of police officers on bikes and foot. It was a tremendous show of force. They clearly learned the lessons of how badly security was handled in Toronto for the G20 and were determined that nothing was going to get out of hand.
I was walking with the family in the late afternoon on Michigan Avenue when we heard the sirens and then we realized that the mob was heading our way. The police literally lined the streets, so that there was no way that the gangster protestors would be able to bash any windows or assault people along the way. Also, many businesses had what looked to me like extra, private security in front just for the weekend-very tough and serious looking dudes.
(Note-although the Chicago police were in full force-MANY of them are ridiculously overweight, they actually look clinically obese. Not good. There don't appear to be any weight/height or fitness regulations for them.)
Anyway, then the mob came through and tourists and families backed away from the street.
About the protestors: a damned fugly bunch of yahoos.
Lots of angry people. Blech.
One of their brilliant slogans was: "You don't need your boss, your boss needs you." I am not sure exactly what that meant, but it seems a pretty sure-fire way to get fired. That is, if ANY of them had jobs (doubtful).
Then, another slogan was: 1, 2 ,3, 4 I'm gonna start a class war.
ZZZZZZZZ boring.
Now, in my estimate, there could not have been more than about 300-400 moron protestors on Saturday afternoon heading down Michigan Avenue. And I think it was at that moment that we heard an ambulance come by-and I think that was when a protestor was injured by a police van? Possibly. If that was the case-then there was certainly no police van barreling into the crowd.
There were stragglers behind the main crowd. Maybe they were wandering in and out of the crowd? I am not sure.
But the main group was very unimpressive.
Chicago otherwise is a grand city-I like it a lot. Grand, that is the best word for it. I know about the corruption and the South Side and the other crappy stuff. But it's got a lot of dynamism and I love that Midwestern charm. I like it more every time I go-and I've been about five or six times for different reasons.
There were a lot of young professionals, young families all about. The women were nicely dressed and not obese like in a lot of other parts of the country (although we were downtown-I imagine the suburbs are different). The main were also pretty fit and dressed preppy-ish for the most part.
Too many tattoos though on too many people. Are people THAT bored? I guess.
We loved it. Love the "Bean", Millenium Park, the Hancock observatory, the water, the Navy Pier-the works.

Miraculous!
Sometimes the bad news gets you down. I try to mix things up a bit here by posting stories that just make my jaw drop with inspiration.
I am inspired by the men and women who use their G-d given talents to make the world a better place, to leave it better than they found it and to help people who actually can't help themselves in certain ways. It's not that they don't want to help themselves-but their bodies or their minds have betrayed them for many different reasons.
This is one such story that humbles me and gives me great hope for the future.
Those who help disabled people gain even the smallest steps toward personal liberty are some of my favourite people in the world, even if I don't know them personally.

I really enjoyed this article, not just because it is thoughtful and well-written, but it gives me great hope that there are many other Jews out there that are not liberal zombies.

This is the perfect example of what is wrong with "kids" or "young adults" nowadays.

Pyjamas Are Not Daytime Clothing
I can't stand seeing people wearing PJs during the day.
It looks stupid and frumpy and the people who engage in this ridiculous practice are schlepper losers.
I don't care what your age, size or figure is.
(Note: PJs do not hide obesity-just saying...)
"Thou shalt not wear pyjamas in public" should be one of those things that are SO OBVIOUS that you shouldn't have to actually say them out loud.
But thank you Oxford University (did I really say that???) for this typically understated British Shaming of the Schleppers.
The pyjama shrews must be tamed!
Stop this "slovenly" practice!
(And while you're at it, say slovenly a few times just for fun. Seriously-how many times in any given month do you actually get to use the word slovenly. It sort of slithers of the tongue. S l o v e n l y ! ! ! )

Sweden is on Team Death.
This is a troubling story on so many levels. The doctor gets punished for taking the father's wishes into consideration and counseling a couple instead of just performing an on-demand abortion.
Apparently, in Sweden, even though it takes two to tango-it takes only one parent to make the decision about terminating a pregnancy. Fathers get no say in the matter.
There are a lot of other things that are messed up in Sweden nowadays. They seem to have a consistent preference for bad choices, trying to socially engineer a more 'progressive' society, for ignoring the antisemitism in their midst and for forcing homeschooling families to consider leaving the country if they don't want their children indoctrinated by the national pre-school system.

I just heard a news report a few days ago that 85% of the Toronto District School Board's budget goes to salaries and benefits-I'm sure this kind of statistic is replicated all over North America.
Public schools tend to indoctrinate, not educate. It's impossible to get rid of bad teachers.
So, what is the logical response to the public school education crisis?
Lower the standards!
A complete dismantling of the public school system is necessary for anything to change.
In the meantime: private schools or vouchers. Period.

So why do Western feminists hate Muslim women?
That is to say: why do they hate Muslim women so much, that they remain deafeningly silent on the issue of Female Genital Mutilation?
Why don't Western "feminists" want Muslim women to enjoy sex ever?

My favourite paragraph in this most excellent article is:
"I have no desire to end up living like Geert Wilders or Kurt Westergaard, never mind dead as Fortuyn and van Gogh. But I also wish to live in truth, as a free man, and I do not like the shriveled vision of freedom offered by the Dutch Openbaar Ministrie, the British immigration authorities, the Austrian courts, Canada’s “human rights” tribunals, and the other useful idiots of Islamic imperialism. So it is necessary for more of us to do what Ayaan Hirsi Ali recommends: share the risk. So that the next time a novel or a cartoon provokes a fatwa, it will be republished worldwide and send the Islamic enforcers a message: Killing one of us won’t do it. And my favourite phrase in that favourite paragraph is:

Words to live by, and bless all the people who are living by those words and by their actions. Whether yielding a pen or a sword there are many brave people around the world sharing the risks and I salute them all.
Now I also think this observation is a keeper-that "shoot the messenger” is the all-purpose European (and North American/Western) cure-all for “Islamophobia".
