A great piece from Mark Steyn on the "lights off" in the UK and the rekindling of the light in Ottawa.
He rightly points out that:
"Nearly four centuries after Milton’s Areopagitica, freedom of speech is
dead in England. In denying her charges access to dissenting ideas, Mrs
May is inviting them to find alternative means of expression. No good
will come from this."
He quotes from Justice Scalia on the gay marriage "debate" in the US.
"It is one thing for a society to elect change; it is another for a court
of law to impose change by adjudging those who oppose it hostes humani
generis, enemies of the human race."
Germany 1939 era anyone?
By the way, my own opinion is that this was never a debate. It was just another litmus test to see how far left wing activists could get, how much they could demand, and how much they could influence moving the traditional goal posts of society.
And of course, this will not be the last demand/victory for this lobby and their type.
And by their type, I don't mean their type of sexual preference.
I really couldn't care less about that unless someone attempts to push it onto my family or my ability to express my opinon about it or protect my family from the over-reach into my parenting or such things.
So, when I say "their type" I refer to totalitarian.
I don't care who people sleep with. It's quite boring and infantile to obsess about these things, though I do understand that this is the absolute obsession of the infantile and pedophile left, the gay and the straight.
I care for example about protecting the culture of life and protecing our children from pedophiles and disgusting over-sexuality, raising moral children and living a life within the Judeo-Christian tradition in a democracy. I care about free speech. I care about liberty.
These rulings and these activists see these victories are mere first steps. And the activist causes are all related. They have gotten a major hit of their victory drug, but like any other addict group-the hit of power is never enough.
There is no satiation point.
These left wing, totalitarian bullies will never be satisfied because there is no end to their pathological desire to run everyone else's lives. They have an infinite capacity to dictate, to bully and to be psychotically interested in everyone else's business. This is a life of a decrepit, evil soul-and there will be no end to the battle.
Steyn concludes by noting:
"What I always objected to in Canada about Section 13 was its casual
contempt for the citizenry, the same contempt on display today in
Washington and London. Like Theresa May, Justice Kennedy would rather
impute motive than engage argument. The need to delegitimize those who
disagree does indeed “demean this institution”, and is profoundly
disturbing."
This is exactly the nub of the problem. The elites, the left and it's contempt for the citizenry and their ability to get away with bullying.
The "need to delegitimize" (a true, psychological compulsion) has proven to be a fantastically effective tool to "transform" America and much of the Western world in a very short time, and the battle will never be over.
Some victories against these evils can be achived of course, with great effort and will, but the fight will rage on forever and some phyric victories of the left will cause irreversable damage to the fabric of our society.
Our very young, precious human-led experiment with divinely inspired democracy is so fragile and precious and under threat as never before in our own midst. The ideological forces of totalitarianism that were all but extinguished in Europe only a few decades ago have risen of course from the ashes and planted themselves quite nicely in our midst. With our compliance of course!
The convergence of the radical left with their comrades and spiritual friends from the Islamic jihad make for a formidable enemy indeed and I hope that we, in the free world, have the strength to beat down their flames once again.
I know I'll never give up. Nor should you.
