Gary, Indiana: Heartland in Decline

I took a train once from Chicago to Indiana, and passed through Gary.

At the time, I remember thinking to myself-oh, "the wrong side of the tracks", I get it now. Even just passing through, you could tell it was a down and out place. Actually, the whole journey from Chicago eastward was a lesson in the mid-western decline.
