Steyn: Taking A Stab At It

Mark Steyn helpfully walks us through Daniel ("Islamists" not "Muslims") Pipes latest talk in Toronto which was covered by Blogwrath.

Where are all the moderates? The silent majority? Well, maybe they don't exist, or they are too scared of their less "moderate" brethren to show up at a lecture or a demonstration?

As Steyn points out:

"...in my experience, “moderate Muslims” invariably turn out on closer inspection to be apostates or so syncretic as to be barely recognizable as co-religionists to their livelier brethren"

(OH MAH GAWD: The "livelier brethren", I am DYING HERE...HAHAHAHAHA, although "excitable lads" remains one of my favourite Steynisms.)

Furthermore:

"There seems no obvious reason why a violent fanatic who can’t speak the language of the country should ever have been granted residency in the United Kingdom, and quite a few reasons why he shouldn’t. But you can’t say that, can you?"

Well, I'll say what I saw yesterday walking along a fancy strip of Bloor Street in Toronto, sort of like our "Magnificent Mile" for you Americans reading.

There were two middle-aged plus parents (probably early sixties actually) in motorized wheelchairs, accompanied by their daughter. They were clearly new immigrants, looking a little bewildered, although I am not sure exactly where they were from it is probably Pakistan or India.

The father was wearing the traditional Islamic garb, the long dress thing and the matching pant outfit, but he was missing one leg and had a long beard and was wearing the traditional head dress also. The mother and daughter were fully veiled and they were speaking in what sounded to me like Urdu (so I'm leaning toward Pakistan).

I could not help but wonder how these people got to Canada and who is paying for their health care and motorized wheelchairs? Why are people like this considered desirable immigrants? Does anyone have a good explanation for this? I'm all ears.

And for anyone who thinks that this is a pot shot against disabled people-you can piss off because my son is disabled, and he was born here and I was born here so it's US first and I will not apologize for that.
