I've seen and read about plenty examples of how the sclerotic, expensive, punitive American "justice" system has destroyed lives.
This story is heartbreaking and enraging.

One needn't be actually sentenced to death in America.
When one is merely sentenced to experience the justice system in action ("pursuit of justice"), that is pretty much the equivalent.
